Where is the best place to buy a domain?

Main Post:

Hi, im working for 20 years actively in webdev and hosted and created a dozen of websites, but for last 4 years i switched almost completely to gamedev and jobs where i dont need to buy anything, just to create, so i lost a "touch" what websites are the best to buy domain/servers for hosting some not to complicated websites/apps, and i know that a lot of that changed in recent years.

Right now i have a lot of older websites/apps and domains hosted on hostgator and half of domains are long ago purchased on godaddy. What is the current trend and maybe the best one? Amazon? What is the best choice for buying domain? What is the best choice to buy hosting for php, what for nodejs or newer frameworks? Thanks!

I can vouch for porkbun.

Under any circumstances do not ever, even for one second consider godaddy. They are the scum of the earth and deserve bankruptcy.

best place to buy a domain name?

Main Post:

so i understand this may seem like a stupid question but i have no idea where the best place to purchase a domain name is. i started the process of building a website on wordpress and they offered me the ability to buy the domain for $18/ year and get the first year free. idk if that’s legit. or if i can pay a one time fee elsewhere and get the domain. also if you’re paying yearly how do you make sure they don’t take the domain name back? thanks in advance for your patience and help.

Namecheap would be the best if you want to save money. I got my .com domain for $5.98 through this page.

Second cloudflare. Moved from google domains to cloudflare and actually saving money. Several of my domains were cheaper at cloudflare. And they include whois privacy for free.

Best site to buy a domain name

Main Post:

I'm new to the world of domains. I've bought one once, but I don't know much about configuring and what are the best options of websites for buying them. I'm trying to buy a domain name for a website I'm building, so

What is the best website to buy a domain name? Like godaddy, vercel?

And should I transfer that domain name to cloudflare? How does this work?

Porkbun. Good prices, good site, overall 100% positive experience. I do however, have Cloudflare set as my nameservers so I’m only using Porkbun as my registrar.

What is the smartest way to obtain a domain name?

Main Post:

I plan on one day, selling a product online. But I’d like to secure the website now, just so I don’t have to worry about the name being taken in the future. How should I go about this? I know it’s technically impossible to own the domain name, but I’d like to have as much freedom as possible. If I purchase the domain from squarespace, I’d like the freedom to take it elsewhere if I’d like. Is that even an option? Also, would I be able to buy the domain as a blog or something, but later turn it into e-commerce? As I don’t want to pay the e-commerce price until I’m actively ready to sell a product. My goal is just to secure the name. Thanks.

Porkbun is the best registrar.

And you want to separate your registrar from your hosting (in case Squarespace bans you, or you get hacked). And Sqaurespace is just overpriced garbage anyway, you're better off using shared hosting (e.g. Racknerd) and set up a free CMS like Wordpress.

The domain is just the name or "address."

Whatever sever you decide to connect it to, and whatever site you set up on that server is up to you.

What's your most exciting domain name?

Main Post:

Looking for some advice/ideas. I am not in the domain business (not selling anything); I own a couple of domains, but mostly from failed or unrealized side projects :)

Anyway, what are some of the exciting domain names you own? Domain names that can generate good discussions around "What could one run/sell/do with that domain name"?

(I've started a podcast with a couple of friends where we discuss business possibilities around domain names, and we're looking for some ideas :))

Any help is appreciated!

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for so many great ideas. I'll let you know if we plan to discuss any of the domains on our podcast

So many more really too. Everything has a purpose, whether it will get further developed is another story.

When buying a domain name, what are all the bells and whistles I need with it?

Main Post:

I've never done this before. I am about to buy a domain name. It will be a website where I sell products worldwide.

There are lots of little add on things. I have no idea what any of it means, so should I also but them or not?

Domain privacy? Premium DNS? SSL?

And should I set it to auto renew the name every year?

Any other advice would be welcome.

EDIT:

Oh, but I do need the email doman name too. Like, [email protected] so I can correspond with my customers and look semi-professional.

Top Comment:

Find somewhere that offers domain privacy, ssl is a plus but you can use cloudflare to do the same thing for free and premium dns is a premium scam.
